We’re still in central Croydon and this time we continue around the central Croydon loop coming to the newest stop on the system.

When the tram leaves Church Street tramstop it has a choice of two routes. It can either go straight on to the Wimbledon line (which we’ll visit in a future series) or turn right onto Tamworth Road (which is what we’ll be doing on this tram). Trams which claim they are going to West Croydon will always go this way, although for many by the time they depart from Church Street the destination has already changed for its next journey (mostly New Addington trams).

Tamworth Road still has just single track but it’s a bit wider and we will be joined by other traffic with several bus routes heading this way too. When the system originally opened there was a long gap between stops as the next stop wasn’t until West Croydon but this all changed on 10th December 2005 when Centrale tramstop finally opened. It had been part of the original plans for Croydon Tramlink but only opened after the Centrale shopping centre opened, and its opening was delayed because of wranglings between TfL and the operators of the system.

The stop is a simple single platform affair. The main difference to most other stops is that whilst trams use just one side of the platform, the other is served by buses travelling on various routes by the entrance to the shopping centre.

2530 shows us the arrangement at Centrale. As it stops with a service to New Addington we can see that the opposite platform face is against the road with the bus stop markings seen. The shelter provides protection both for tram and bus passengers too.
