{"id":64206,"date":"2026-08-16T17:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T16:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=64206"},"modified":"2026-08-16T10:26:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T09:26:51","slug":"theyve-run-in-2026-meet-the-trams-east-anglia-transport-museum-london-transport-1858","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=64206","title":{"rendered":"They\u2019ve Run in 2026 \u2013 Meet the Trams: East Anglia Transport Museum \u2013 London Transport 1858"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another outing to the East Anglia Transport Museum as we continue to \u201cMeet the Trams\u201d and this time its <strong>London Transport 1858<\/strong> which is in focus.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>London Passenger Transport Board HR\/2 1858<\/strong> was built for London County Council Tramways in 1930 by English Electric before it transferred to ownership of the LPTB upon its creation in 1933. For the first eight years the tram had open platforms before it received timber fitted screens fitted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1858<\/strong> would remain in service until 1952 (at which point the London system was abandoned of course), with it latterly based at New Cross Depot and operated on routes 72 and 46.<\/p>\n<p>It would be saved for preservation by Peter Davis and after a period of storage at Penhall Road (amongst the many trams which go there for scrapping) he managed to secure a home for the tram at Chessington Zoo, with a move taking place until 2<sup>nd<\/sup> September 1952.<\/p>\n<p>In 1964, with the Zoo having plans for development a new home was required for <strong>1858<\/strong> and after considering several options (including Hayling Island and Crich) it was decided that it would move to the East Anglia Transport Museum near Lowestoft in Suffolk.<\/p>\n<p>The move took place in April 1964 with it arriving at Carlton Colville on 10<sup>th<\/sup> April 1964 where it became just the second tram on site \u2013 <strong>Lowestoft 14<\/strong> being the other. <strong>1858<\/strong> would initially enter service in 1971 (alongside <strong>Blackpool 159<\/strong>) although it was soon realised that when it was withdrawn in London it was nearing the end of its operational life.
