Whilst the Blackpool trams available have generated interest, it isn’t the same for Krefeld 412 which has had no takers and will now be stripped before scrapping takes place this coming winter.

Krefeld 412 is a Duewag T4 tram which was built in 1957 for the German city. It would remain in service there until 1981 when it was withdrawn. With Krefeld and Leicester being twinned, 412 was donated to the East Midlands city (along with trailer 41 – a vehicle which seemed to fall off the radar with its final fate unknown). It was planned that they would be used on a proposed tramway in Abbey Park but these plans fell through and so the trams remained stored.

After a period inside Abbey Park Depot, they were later stored outside. They later moved to both the Great Central Railway and Great Central Railway North, where outside storage continued for the pair. Then it was down to London where they stayed at the Pump House Museum in Walthamstow. That is from where NEETT acquired the tram and in June 2013 it made the lengthy journey to NELSAM, becoming just the second tram on site (Blackpool 721 being the first).

Many years of outside storage have taken its toll on 412 with the bodywork showing signs of wear and tear, even though it has now been undercover for 12 years. Sadly this condition has probably contributed to no groups able to take the tram on.

As part of the transfer of ownership between NEETT and NELSAM, the museum stated earlier this year that of the tram they were only looking to retain Blackpool 721 and Graz 210, with Krefeld 412 along with Blackpool cars 647 and 674+684 being made available.

412’s future has now been confirmed with NELSAM currently stripping the tram. Some of the internal wood lining has already been stripped and this has shown that the metalwork is actually far worse than had been initially thought. Once the stripping of the car is completed it is likely that over the winter the car will be scrapped.

But there is a chance for you to own a part of 412 with seats from inside the tram currently being sold at the museum. Buyer must collect and some have already found new homes.

Of note is that the tram spent 24 years in service on its home tramway but has been in the UK for 45 years – and hasn’t run at all in that period!

A view of Krefeld 412 in the tram exhibition building.
