Both were taken to hospital for treatment, with one suffering serious injuries and the other minor injuries.

The investigation found that the two pedestrians were unaware of the trams approach as they had not recognised its approach and were not alerted by the audible warnings given by the tram. Its also said that the crossing layout and signage didn’t effectively alert the pedestrians to the risk from approaching trams.

An underlying factor to the incident was that the management of risk at Staniforth Road footpath crossing by South Yorkshire Future Trams Ltd and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority was not sufficiently effective.

The RAIB have also said that the injuries one of the pedestrians suffered may have been more serious due to a raised cobble surface that was situated immediately beyond the crossing.

Three recommendations have been made:

South Yorkshire Future Trams Ltd and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority should continue their review of the assessment of risk at Stainforth Road footpath crossing and to implement control measures.

South Yorkshire Future Trams Ltd should address inconsistencies in tram audible warning usage to deliver assurance of a consistent approach across the network

South Yorkshire Future Trams Ltd and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority should work with other relevant local transport organisations, to carry out assessment of all locations on the South Yorkshire Supertram network where there is a credible risk of pedestrians being struck by a tram, and to implement changes to minimise injuries.

The full RAIB report can be read at https://www.gov.uk/government/news/report-102026-collision-between-a-tram-and-two-pedestrians-at-staniforth-road

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have made three recommendations following an incident where two pedestrians were hit by a tram at Staniforth Road on the South Yorkshire Supertram network.

[24
