Full details have been announced of the first set of works whilst it is also confirmed that more work will take place during August in the city centre.

The first set of works will start on Monday 27th July and continue until Friday 7th August with no trams able to run to Herdings Park throughout this period. Then from Saturday 8th August works will move to Fitzalan Square, although full details of what that will mean for services have yet to be confirmed.

Back to the first summer works and this period will see track renewal take place on Norton Avenue. This will mean no trams will run from Gleadless Townend to Herdings Park and anyone wishing to travel on that section is advised they should use local bus services, with Supertram tickets due to be valid for travel on those.

The Blue, Yellow and Tram-Train routes will continue to run as normal but the same can’t be said of the Purple route. Considering the Purple route only runs an hourly service (Monday to Saturday) and is often the first route to be suspended during disruption you may expect that no trams at all would run under this colour, but that’s not quite the case.

Supertram have started that a reduced service will run between Cathedral and Gleadless Townend although that doesn’t quite fully explain what is happening! By reduced service they mean it will only really be running in the evening, except for one early morning working from Cricket Inn Road to Gleadless Townend (Monday to Saturday only) which departs at 0517 arriving Gleadless Townend at 0537 (and then doesn’t return so presumably becomes a Blue route tram from then).

There are hourly services from around 2000 until the end of service. The services will actually be running through to Birley Lane rather than Gleadless Townend with first tram from there at 1953 (one minute later on Sunday. It will continue to run to Cathedral.

More details about the work at Fitzalan Square will follow.

The Supertram Improvement Works page with information on these works is available at https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-GB/supertram/Herdings-works-July-2026

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) since they took back public control, but this summer will again see major renewal works taking place on the Supertram network.
