That is no more noticeable than before and after major events, whether that be sporting or concerts, and UKTram have recently been supporting South Yorkshire Supertram with a visit by Steve Duckering, UKTram Operations Manager, for discussions around improving passenger management and customer experience.

There are two key locations on the Supertram network which see major events take place – Leppings Lane (for football at Hillsborough as well as the popular Tramlines festival) and Arena (for numerous events).

Trevor Stocker, Head of Service Delivery at South Yorkshire Supertram, and Harry McCrae, Light Rail Performance & Delivery Manager at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, welcome Steve Duckering to Sheffield as they explored how infrastructure improvements, and operational best practice could help improve customer flow and enhance passenger experience during large-scale events. They looked at how existing layouts could evolve to better manage large crowds while balancing operational requirements, stakeholder needs and the constraints of legacy infrastructure. They also explored examples of best practice across the UK and further afield, which helped to identity opportunities to inform future proposals.

Steve Duckering said: “One of UKTram’s greatest strengths is bringing operators together to share experience and learn from one another. By working collaboratively, we can explore solutions and help improve customer experience. It was great to spend time with the Sheffield team looking at how we can continue improving the customer journey for events and considering how lessons from across the sector could support this too.”

Trevor Stocker commented: “Major events present unique challenges and it’s incredibly valuable to be able to draw on the knowledge and experience available across the UKTram network. Having Steve visit the locations gave us the opportunity to discuss ideas on site and begin shaping solutions that will ultimately improve the experience for our customers.”

During the visit they reviewed current on-site layouts and discussed the potential role of design specialists and broader industry expertise to develop practical solutions.

One of the huge advantages of tram and light rail networks is their ability to move large crowds of people in a short space of time.
