The Tyne and Wear Metro will be closed for nine days between the Airport and South Gosforth in August to allow more upgrade work to take place. As part of Nexus\u2019 continued approach to complete as much work as possible during planned line closures this will coincide with the continued redevelopment of Regent Centre Interchange which will reach a key juncture in this period.<\/p>\n

The closure will be between Saturday 15th<\/sup> and Sunday 23rd<\/sup> August 2026.<\/p>\n During these nine days the large metal canopy that covers the bus station roadway and Metro lines at Regent Centre will be removed. The station entrance will be inaccessible whilst this work takes place.<\/p>\n Track renewal, station upgrades at Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Kingston Park, Fawdon and Wansbeck Road, cable repair work and lineside estate management will also take place.<\/p>\n Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: \u201cThis project represents a major investment in our Airport line. The closure allows us to really crack on with the renewal scheme at Regent Centre. The station canopy needs to come down as part of the wider station refurbishment and this can only be done safely with a line closure in place.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re also investing in track, stations and other pieces of infrastructure, which require renewal work to ensure we have a functional Metro system for many years to come.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no\u202fgood time\u202fto close a line,\u202fand we do so to minimise disruption to as many customers\u202fas possible.\u202fOur plans consider school holidays,\u202fto ensure the\u202fleast\u202fpossible\u202fdisruption to customers and the most efficient works. By scheduling these works during the schools\u2019 summer break, we can avoid\u202fimpacting\u202fbusier commutes, and less\u202fcongestion on the roads should\u202fspeed up alternative\u202ftravel\u202ftimes on replacement buses.<\/p>\n \u201cCustomers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to make their journeys through the affected area.
