The latest art exhibition at Tynemouth Metro station is commemorating the centenary of the General Strike which is probably won\u2019t shock you to find out happened 100 years ago in 1926.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Bridge Gallery at the station features a series of colourful banners which tell the story of the strike in the northeast, where a group of miners were infamously jailed after derailing the Flying Scotsman.<\/p>\n<p>In the Flying Scotsman incident a group of miners inadvertently derailed it in Cramlington, Northumberland. This saw eight miners sentenced to 48 years\u2019 penal servitude for their part in the derailment which saw one person receive minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p>North Tyneside Arts Studies (NTAS) worked with more than 30 people on the artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Lynne Dickinson, Station Delivery Manager at Nexus, said: \u201cTynemouth Metro station is a renowned location for art projects through its bridge gallery. We are delighted to see that continue through this latest exhibition marking the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the General Strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe art work will be seen by many thousands of people who pass through the Metro station each and every week, and we hope they enjoy seeing it. Metro plays a really significant role in showcasing public art work through our Art on Transport Programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jess Kinnersley, NTAS Creative Support Worker and Project Lead, said: \u201cThis exciting exhibition has been developed by our members looking for a connection to the event\u00a0and how the universal themes of community and connection matter as much today as they did 100 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been hosting weekly workshops for the past two months, exploring the story and using the theme \u2018Broken Lines\u2019, which helps people focus not only on the physical act of breaking the train lines but also, importantly, the human elements of the story \u2013 human struggles, lives changed and communities divided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Broken Lines Exhibition is running until Sunday 12<sup>th<\/sup> July 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years the Tyne and Wear Metro network has not only become synonymous with operating a train service across the region but also various displays of artwork.
