{"id":63167,"date":"2026-06-01T22:00:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T21:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=63167"},"modified":"2026-06-01T12:58:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T11:58:49","slug":"in-pictures-the-trams-of-walton-on-the-naze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=63167","title":{"rendered":"In Pictures: The trams of Walton-on-the-Naze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex (close to Clacton) is not exactly somewhere a lot of enthusiasts will think of as somewhere which has a lot of association with trams but you would be wrong as it is home to a number of tram bodies in various conditions which have been collected over the years. In May 2026, Ken Jones had a private visit to see the trams and managed to capture the following images of the five trams which remain stored there, two inside and three outside under tarpaulins.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The five trams located at Walton-on-the-Naze are Lisbon cars <strong>327<\/strong>, <strong>614<\/strong> and <strong>705<\/strong>, <strong>Northampton 21<\/strong> and <strong>Colchester 10<\/strong>. Two trams which were formally on site and are no longer there are <strong>Lisbon 345<\/strong> and <strong>Coventry 71<\/strong>. It is believed that <strong>71<\/strong> has now moved to storage near Ardleigh, Colchester.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63168\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1.10-kj.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63168\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1.10-kj-550x368.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1.10-kj-550x368.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1.10-kj-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1.10-kj.jpg 1287w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tram that started it all is Colchester 10. The trams at Walton-on-the-Naze are often referred to as \u201cProject 10\u201d as a result. 10 is stored undercover but is surrounded by various other items which makes photography difficult but this view shows the surviving lower deck of the tram. This was built by the Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works in 1905, one of two trams in its batch which were additional trams for the electric tram network which had started operation the year before. Just the lower deck now survives. This was built around 1936 to the standard Lisbon tram design and is believed to have remained in service until around 1995, after which it must have made its way to the UK.
