{"id":63068,"date":"2026-05-23T14:00:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T13:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=63068"},"modified":"2026-05-22T19:23:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:23:18","slug":"major-renewal-project-for-regent-metro-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=63068","title":{"rendered":"Major renewal project for Regent Metro Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A major \u00a37.9 million renewal project of Regent Tyne and Wear Metro station is set to be completed by Kier following the award of a contract to complete the work.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As part of the contract, Kier will create a safer, more reliable, accessible and future-ready transport hub that is set to transform the travelling experience for Metro passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Kier have previously worked on the upgrade and restoration work at Whitley Bay station which was completed in 2025 and will now use their experience in that project towards making Regent \u2013 in Gosforth \u2013 a much more pleasant place to catch the Metro.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of works will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creation of a new retail unit<\/li>\n<li>Removal of existing old bus canopy, which covers the road through the interchange<\/li>\n<li>Modernising mechanical and electrical systems<\/li>\n<li>Providing civils and architectural elements<\/li>\n<li>Creating a brighter, more inviting space for passengers, to enhance the customer experience<\/li>\n<li>Updating wayfinding for improved accessibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kier will also be engaging with local schools and community groups throughout the project.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: \u201cWe are delighted to have appointed KIER to carry out this major project on behalf of Nexus. Having recently working together on the Whitley Bay Metro Station restoration, we&#8217;re looking forward to getting the Regent Centre refurbishment underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegent Centre Interchange plays a vital role within Newcastle in connecting people to where they need to be. As a strategic hub on both the Metro and bus network, it\u2019s essential that Regent Centre sets the standard for modern, high\u2011quality and accessible public transport and what it looks like in our region.
