The first set of works started earlier today (Saturday 28th March) and will see service changes until the end of Sunday 12th April – but the good news is that once these are finished Supertram will be able to return to their 12-minute frequency timetable.

The works in this period will be taking place in the Manor Top, Hollinsend and Spring Lane areas, and will be impacting services on both the Blue and Purple routes. Work totalling £2.75 million will take place during these 16 days.

Work which is due to take place includes track renewal and track slab repairs at:

Manor Top (Ridgeway Road to City Road)

City Road

Park Grange Road (Spring Lane)

Hollinsend (Ridgeway Road)

From 28th March until 12th April the following service changes will be in place:

Blue route – trams run between Malin Bridge and Sheffield Station, and from Gleadless Townend to Halfway (every 15 minutes). Replacement bus service BP1 will run between Fitzalan Square and Herdings Park (every 15 minutes)

The Yellow route and Tram-Train service will run as normal.

When a full tram service resumes on Monday 13th April, it is planned that the 12-minute daytime frequency timetable will be reintroduced. Trams have been running at a reduced 15-minute frequency since the end of November 2025 with the reliability of services being offered suffering due to a shortage of drivers. But now with additional drivers having been trained over the winter it is possible for the more regular timetable to run once again.

Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard, said: “I said we were going to get a grip on Supertram services, and we are.

“We’ve got the new drivers trained quickly and they’re helping us get back to the Supertram service that people rightly expect. Reliability across February was 99.2%, the highest since November. Passenger numbers have grown 3.8%, the strongest year-on-year growth since last April.

“Every new driver we employ, every metre of track we replace, every improvement we make, brings us closer to creating the world class public transport network South Yorkshire deserves. I’m really pleased we’ll be back to the normal 12-minute timetable after these important upgrade works have been completed.”

Full details of the engineering works taking place from 28th March to 12th April can be viewed on the Travel South Yorkshire website at https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-GB/supertram/manor-top-works-march-april-2026

School holidays and expected better weather/more daylight hours can only mean one thing – it’s the start of another year of improvement works on the South Yorkshire Supertram network!
