{"id":62343,"date":"2026-03-25T20:00:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T20:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=62343"},"modified":"2026-03-24T17:00:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T17:00:57","slug":"more-investment-into-metro-overhead-line-this-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=62343","title":{"rendered":"More investment into Metro overhead line this April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There will be no Tyne and Wear Metro services between Pelaw and South Shields from Monday 13<sup>th<\/sup> to Friday 17<sup>th<\/sup> April to allow for major work to take place on the overhead line. This work is part of the Asset Renewal Programme and has been scheduled during the Easter holidays to minimise disruption and with less traffic on the roads the road replacement transport should suffer fewer delays.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The main focus of the project will see a total of 3,200 metres of new overhead wire installed. But as part of Nexus\u2019 continued approach to undertake as much work as possible during planned line closures, additional work will also take place. This will include track engineering, signalling maintenance, structural inspections, station maintenance and lineside estate management.<\/p>\n<p>During the work the following train services will still run:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pelaw to St James<\/li>\n<li>South Hylton to Airport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A replacement bus service (numbered 900) will run between South Shields and Heworth. This will call at, or close to, all stations on the closed route.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: \u201cThis is a key investment in our overhead lines to ensure that Metro can continue to serve South Tyneside long into the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverhead wires are absolutely critical to our operation, and we are currently engaged in a rolling programme of replacing this key part of our infrastructure right across the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no\u202fgood time\u202fto close a line,\u202fand we do so to minimise disruption to as many customers\u202fas possible.\u202fOur plans consider school holidays,\u202fto ensure the\u202fleast\u202fpossible\u202fdisruption to customers and the most efficient works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy scheduling these works during the schools\u2019 Easter break, we can avoid\u202fimpacting\u202fbusier commutes, and less\u202fcongestion on the roads should\u202fspeed up alternative\u202ftravel\u202ftimes on replacement buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to make their journeys through the affected area.
