The latest closure of the section of the West Midlands Metro into Wolverhampton St George\u2019s is now underway with the last tram (for now) having served the stop on Friday 6th<\/sup> February 2026. According to the literature released on their website in connection with the closure this will allow signalling equipment to be replaced although as these photos from Andy Walters show it looks as if it will go beyond that.<\/p>\n

They have wasted little time in getting on with the work and indeed warning notices posted around the worksite said that overnight works would be starting as soon as the night of Friday 6th<\/sup> February and continuing until Friday 13th<\/sup> February. Daytime works are then set to continue until Monday 2nd<\/sup> March. This is the first time that an end date has been put on the works with the website notice just saying when it would start. Obviously just because the work is due to finish by 2nd<\/sup> March there is no guarantee trams will start running to St George\u2019s again from that date.<\/p>\n

The signs have also shown that although the website says its signalling works it is actually described as more general track maintenance works, and the evidence of the first work shows this with replacement points being installed. Its hoped that the new pointwork will also help the signalling at the junction between the two routes in Wolverhampton, which has had issues since originally commissioned.<\/p>\n
