The new fares are to be introduced from 1<sup>st<\/sup> April and are part of the Mayor of the North East, Kim McGuinness\u2019 pledge to make travel more affordable and match the price of bus tickets in the region.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new fares will mean that single tickets are capped at \u00a32.50 (when using Pop Pay As You Go), regardless of the number of zones being travelled through. And anyone who switches from paper tickets to using a Pop Pay As You Go card will save between \u00a31 and \u00a32.60, with some Pop journeys themselves being cut in price.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, adult day tickets will be capped at \u00a35.00.<\/p>\n<p>Kim McGuinness said: \u201cI\u2019m delighted we&#8217;re bringing Mayor\u2019s Fares to Metro. Whether you travel by bus or Metro the most you\u2019ll pay for a single ticket in the North East is now \u00a32.50, saving Metro passengers up to \u00a32.60 for a single journey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This marks the biggest change to Metro fares for 20 years as we make public transport better, easier to use and cheaper. Since we introduced our \u00a32.50 bus cap, we&#8217;ve seen local people make 9 million more journeys and we hope to see more people using the Metro now too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John Fenwick, Director of Finance and Resources at Nexus, said: \u201cThe Mayor\u2019s Fare will\u202fcap\u202fsingle tickets at \u00a32.50,\u202fno matter how many zones you\u202ftravel in.\u202fIt means that people won\u2019t pay more on the Metro than they would on the bus, making public transport simpler to use. The price freeze to under 21s travel also delivers affordable pricing for young people in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way for customers to save is to\u202fuse Pop PAYG. These are the biggest savings\u202fwe\u2019ve\u202fbeen able to deliver for our customers in\u202fa very long\u202ftime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u202fa change that\u202fwe believe\u202fwill help us grow journey numbers at the most exciting time in the\u202fMetro\u2019s\u202fhistory\u202fas\u202fthe roll out of our\u202fnew fleet of trains\u202fcompletes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mayor\u2019s Fares have already significantly increased customer growth on the bus\u202fnetwork,\u202fand we&#8217;re confident it can also deliver successful growth on Metro journeys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u202fhave set a\u202fbalanced package of fares, one that will\u202fhelp us to meet our running costs,\u202fsupport the essential services that we deliver,\u202fand offer savings to our customers\u202fon the cost of travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These fares will be in place until at least April 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The plan to make travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro more affordable has been approved.
