A new 15-year partnership has been signed between Hitachi Rail and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) which will aim to modernise and improve the network using the latest available technology. The signing of the partnership is another milestone in SYMCA\u2019s plans to enhance passenger services, connecting communities and helping to build a bigger and better economy.<\/p>\n

Details of just what this partnership will mean are fairly limited with the Hitachi Rail press release stating that they will \u201csupport the renewal of core Supertram systems, providing modern, digitally enabled solutions that enhance operational performance and passenger experience.\u201d This will presumably cover things like signalling and other aspects of the infrastructure. What the deal doesn\u2019t guarantee is that there will be a fleet of Hitachi built trams running in Sheffield any time soon.<\/p>\n
Tom Howard, Director of Transport Development and Capital Delivery at SYMCA, said: \u201cSupertram is a key component of the South Yorkshire public transport network, and since operations returned to our control last year, we have set out a programme of investment to ensure the system is fit for the future.\u201d He added, \u201cThis strategic partnership with Hitachi will ensure we can work collaboratively to harness the latest technology from an internationally experienced supplier in the Light Rail sector, delivering real benefits for our passengers over the lifetime of the framework. We look forward to starting work together, which over the first couple of years will initially focus on systems to improve the reliability of timetable delivery alongside enhanced real-time information, making journeys smoother and more predictable for passengers.\u201d<\/p>\n
