Major work to ensure that Whitefield Tunnel on Manchester Metrolink\u2019s Bury line remains safe will be getting underway this weekend with service changes required as a result. The work is seeing the replacement of beams which support the roof of the tunnel and comes after the successful completion of preparatory work.<\/p>\n

The works are necessary after a defective beam was discovered. Some weekend and overnight work is necessary to secure and protect the overhead line equipment so the repairs can take place as safely and quickly as possible. A crane will be used for the beam replacement work at times.<\/p>\n
Work is due to take place as follows:<\/p>\n
Replacement buses will operate instead.<\/p>\n
Ian Davies, TfGM\u2019s Network Director for Metrolink, said: \u201cWhitefield Tunnel dates back to the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0century and this essential work will ensure tram services can continue to safely pass through it for decades to come.<\/p>\n “This is a complex job, but we will do everything we can to\u00a0minimise disruption to passengers, residents and businesses.<\/p>\n \u201cOn Saturday Metrolink tickets will be accepted on Bee Network bus services 97, 135 & 524 in addition to replacement buses operating on a 12-minute frequency, on Sunday a replacement bus service will operate on a 15-minute frequency while the works take place.<\/p>\n \u201cI would encourage people who use the Bury line to plan ahead and check the Bee Network website, app and social media channels for the most up-to-date travel information.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Major work to ensure that Whitefield Tunnel on Manchester Metrolink\u2019s Bury line remains safe will be getting underway this weekend with service changes required as a result.
