As with many of the stops on the original Metrolink network, Stretford was once a railway station until that was closed to allow conversion to trams. The station at Stretford can trace its history back to 1849 when it opened as Edge Lane. It didn\u2019t stay as Edge Lane long, with its renaming as Stretford coming in September 1849 \u2013 less than two months after opening. It closed to trains on 24<sup>th<\/sup> December 1991 and reopened as a Metrolink stop on 15<sup>th<\/sup> June 1992.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56482\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/5a.stretford-kc.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56482\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56482\" src=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/5a.stretford-kc-550x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/5a.stretford-kc-550x367.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/5a.stretford-kc-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/5a.stretford-kc.jpg 1285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-56482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The \u201dThen\u201d image shows one of the pre-1971 electric units just arriving at Stretford station. These units were built in the 1930s and were unique to the line, running under 1500V DC electric wires.
