The tram is running on a viaduct which was built adjacent to the bridge carrying the Edinburgh &amp; Glasgow Railway over the river. The river itself rises in the Pentland Hills and is about 20 miles long. It passes through the city from south west to north east and enters the sea through Leith Docks. The Water of Leith walkway follows it for about 12 miles from Balerno to Leith.
