Charles McManus, 18 from North Shields, has successfully completed his ultra marathon which saw him visit all 60 stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Starting at 0300 from South Hylton he completed the 77 mile route just after 2030 when he arrived at Monument Station in central Newcastle.<\/p>\n

He ran in memory of his father, David, who passed away in 2017. All of the money raised is going to St Oswald\u2019s Hospice in Newcastle and the Brain Tumour Trust. So far he has raised \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n
Charles said: \u201cI just wanted to do something to help others who are in a similar position to my family, when dad was unwell.<\/p>\n
“I was quite focussed but at the end it got quite emotional – all my family were there, including my gran.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy legs are absolutely horrendous, I’m really struggling to walk.<\/p>\n
“I stopped at every single station and took a picture at every station, I think South Shields or Whitley Bay were my favourites.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lynne Dickinson, Head of Station Delivery at Nexus, added: \u201cThis was a superhuman effort by Charles and we are in awe of his determination to run the full length of the Metro system in a single day.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has ended up running the equivalent of three marathons back to back. It\u2019s inspirational and incredible what he has achieved.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe run took place on the quickest routes adjacent to our lines, so none of it was actually on the actual Metro tracks themselves. With the route he took, in some areas he\u2019s had to run back the way he came, so he\u2019s done more than the Metro route length.<\/p>\n
