Delegates attending the UK Light Rail Conference have heard how tramway\u2019s across the country are making huge strides towards an even safer future thanks to a collaborative approach. This has helped to drive down accident risks and reduced sector costs according to Light Rail Standards and Safety Board (LRSSB) Chief Executive Carl Williams.<\/p>\n

Mr Williams provided the keynote speech at the conference, which took place at the University of Leeds in July. He said: \u201c\u201cFrom providing expert analysis of previous incidents to researching new technologies, we\u2019ve become world leaders when it comes to developing a comprehensive approach to all aspects of light rail safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, our data-led modelling, combined with a host of other pioneering projects, has also delivered excellent value, with the \u00a37 million invested in the LRSSB by the sector and the Department for Transport saving an estimated \u00a320 million when compared to the cost of each network acting individually.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy working in partnership with network operators, regulators and other key stakeholders, we\u2019re clearly at the forefront of a revolution in risk reduction that has also included a full and ongoing review of safety guidance relating to tramway design and operations that will also help reduce costs associated with future light rail schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cMoving forward, collaboration and ongoing funding will be key to driving even more safety improvements across the sector as we work in partnership with academics and industry experts to investigate the potential of new technology while sharing best practice with colleagues across light rail.<\/p>\n
