{"id":54191,"date":"2024-06-30T11:00:49","date_gmt":"2024-06-30T10:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=54191"},"modified":"2024-06-27T20:25:56","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T19:25:56","slug":"metro-stained-glass-artwork-back-at-monkseaton-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=54191","title":{"rendered":"Metro stained glass artwork back at Monkseaton station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The colourful \u201cBeach and Shipyards\u201d art installation \u2013 a stained glass art work \u2013 is back in pride of place at Monkseaton Tyne and Wear Metro station following an extensive restoration to take it back to its former glory.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cate Watkinson and Rita Griskonyte carefully cleaned and repaired the installation which is back bookending the historic canopy at the station. The work was undertaken at the Sunderland National Glass Centre.<\/p>\n<p>In total \u00a3575,000 has been spent on refurbishing the Metro station with the canopy dating back to 1915 and needing some TLC to take it back to its former condition.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah McManus, Head of Renewals at Nexus, said: \u201che stained glass artwork at Monkseaton Metro station is one of the most striking pieces of public art on the network, so we are delighted to have it restored to its former glory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve invested over \u00a3500,000 into the station\u2019s historic canopy so the structure is strengthened here for many years to come, and the historic canopy is back to looking its best at a station which is a key gateway into our region\u2019s amazing coastline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing that Mike Davis\u2019s former student Cate Watkinson has had the opportunity to restore his work and what an amazing job it is.\u00a0\u2018Beaches and Shipyards\u2019 played a big part in the first few years of our art on transport programme in the early 1980s, not long after Metro first opened. It\u2019s truly fantastic to see this unique piece of art looking as good as new again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artwork was originally unveiled in 1983 and was designed by Mike Davis. It features two pieces: \u201cBeach\u201d which is executed in a bold and colourful style was designed from a school\u2019s competition won by Rosalind Hurst whilst \u201cShipyards\u201d is a more abstract treatment of the River Tyne\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monkeseaton Station has also recently been fitted with a defibrillator as part of the National Defibrillator Network following fundraising by the Wellfield Defibrillator Group.
