Both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche have their headquarters in the city and its also home to one of the largest zoos and botanical gardens in Europe.

The city is now home to a Stadtbhan light rail system which started running on its standard gauge network in 1985. This system is the successor of a tram network (which ran on metre gauge) and now consists of 81 miles (130km) of route mileage. In addition to the modern light rail system there is also a heritage line, a rack railway and a funicular meaning there is something for everyone (that’s if everyone likes their transport to be on rails we guess!).

In this photo below – captured in 1990 – we are looking at 3013 which is at the end of route U1 which now runs between Vaihingen and Fellbach. In the standard yellow livery 3013 is a Duewag DT8.4 which was built in 1985. 80 of this class were built for Stuggart and there remain 76 operational.

Photograph by Nigel Pennick, 1990

Its time to move on in our series which takes a look at trams from outside the British Isles and the next location the pin has stuck in on our map in Stuttgart in Germany.

[63
