The next location for \u201cPicture in Time\u201d is South London as we take a look at some images from the past from the Croydon (London) Tramlink) system. We start off black and white as we take a look at some of the construction works on the network before it opened.<\/p>\n

The first generation tram system in Croydon stopped running in 1951 but by the end of the century a new system was planned as part of the modern public transport operation. Some 47 years after that last tram had run construction works were underway in May 1998 as part of the return of the trams.<\/p>\n
With the railway line into West Croydon the other side of the fence there are temporary traffic lights in the foreground with the first construction works taking place beyond the wooden fencing in the mid distance. We\u2019re on Waddon New Road here and the works are to construct the bridge which will take the trams over the railway line. Behind those works can be seen the footbridge over the railway which will be replaced by another to this side of the tram bridge.<\/p>\n
