In addition the plan is for all operational passenger cars to be used at some point during the day and for some of the works cars to also be operated.

Although it was as recent as 2009 that a horse car line-up was displayed for an enthusiast’s event at Crich it is pleasing that the 50th anniversary of the operation of horse trams at the Museum is being marked and of course the line-up this year should be larger than that of four years ago. In 2009 the line-up consisted of Chesterfield 8, Oporto 9, Sheffield 15 and Cardiff 21 but this time round these four should be joined by Leeds 107, which recently arrived at Crich following its major restoration and launch in its home city over the August Bank Holiday weekend. It must be quite some time since five horse cars were displayed together in the open on the UK mainland and it should be quite a sight!

As well as this display it is planned that a tram usually housed within the Exhibition Hall will be displayed outside. No details have been revealed as to what this tram might be but we all like a little bit of mystery in our lives don’t we and it all adds to the excitement on the day!

An intensive tram service is planned to be operated throughout the day using all available operational passenger trams at some point in the day and these will be joined by some of the works cars in operation too.

It had been hoped that Crich would have been in a position by now to actually announce full details of the programme of events but this has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. It is now hoped to announce this later in the week. As usual all events at Enthusiasts’ Day are subject to the weather and availability of tramcars.

British Trams Online will be present on the day and all being well will provide our usual extensive live coverage on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/BritishTramsOnline).

The big tram event for enthusiasts at the Crich Tramway Village takes place on Saturday 14th September with the main highlight this year being a line-up of horse cars to mark the 50th anniversary of the operation of horse trams … Continue reading →

[8
