The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board have been busy in the lead up to the festive period with a series of new safety videos released aimed at motorists when driving close to tramways in the UK. Two new videos have been created which cover the dangers of jumping red lights and leaving enough space for trams to pass.<\/p>\n

These videos join previous safety videos which were aimed at pedestrians and passengers and combine to try and make the environment around tramways safer for all road users.<\/p>\n
Jamie Swift, LRSSB Head of Commercial, said: \u201cFeaturing eye-catching graphics, the latest \u2018Be SMART around Trams\u2019 videos drive home the message that trams take longer to stop than other road vehicles and cannot take other evasive action to avoid collisions. As a result, it\u2019s vital that other road users follow the appropriate traffic signals and never risk running a red light, even if they can\u2019t see a tram approaching.\u201d<\/p>\n
These videos have been developed in partnership with South Yorkshire Supertram and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and have been produced by Creative Star.<\/p>\n
A SYMCA spokesperson said: \u201cAccidents involving trams have the potential to be very serious; for car users, passengers and colleagues onboard. With more people traveling, we\u2019re reminding everyone to take extra care around the Supertram network \u2013 check signals, keep to crossings, look both ways and listen out this festive season.\u201d<\/p>\n
