Manhole cover in Atherton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After 78 editions we come to the end (for now?) of our &#8220;Still Standing&#8221; series as we take a look at old tramway infrastructure still in situ, even if it was being used for something very different to its original purpose. Throughout this series\u00a0 we have featured buildings, track, poles, rosettes and even section boxes nowhere near a tramway route but this is a first \u2013 it\u2019s a manhole cover! Located in Atherton, Greater Manchester the history of its ownership can clearly be seen.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The South Lancashire Tramways Company ran from 1902 to 1933 with a 39 mile network stretching from what is now Merseyside to Greater Manchester with Atherton as the hub of the system. It has connections with through running to other tramways in the area before at the start of the 1930s the company sought powers to replace trams with trolleybuses. 3<sup>rd<\/sup> August 1930 saw the first route transfer operation before on 16<sup>th<\/sup> December 1933 the route between Leigh and Four Lane Ends became the last line to succumb.<\/p>\n<p>Some parts of the South Lancashire Tramway Company are still extant today, including tram no. <strong>65<\/strong> which is in an unrestored state at the Greater Manchester Museum of Transport, but one of the more unusual \u2013 and less likely to be noticed! \u2013 survivors is this manhole cover which had an unknown purpose.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40073\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?attachment_id=40073\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40073\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40073\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40073\" src=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/athertonmanhole-kc-550x412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/athertonmanhole-kc-550x412.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/athertonmanhole-kc-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/athertonmanhole-kc-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/athertonmanhole-kc.jpg 1281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The manhole cover is seen here in Atherton.
