Brighton Corporation Tramways Depot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this edition of \u201cStill Standing!\u201d we take a trip to the south coast and find ourselves in Brighton.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The building seen in the below photos is the former Brighton Corporation Tramways Depot on Lewes Road which was opened on 25<sup>th<\/sup> November 1901 and closed to trams on 31<sup>st<\/sup> August 1939. It was the sole depot of the tramway throughout its operating career which funnily enough covers exactly the same dates! At its peak the route length of the tramway was just short of 9.5 miles but despite this relatively small size it had a credible 165 double deck trams in the fleet, all of which would have been kept at this 6 track depot.<\/p>\n<p>Upon closure of the tramway in 1939 the depot was converted for use by trolleybuses and buses with buses taking sole charge in 1960 and that is exactly what is still used for in 2021 as we see in these images.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39482\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?attachment_id=39482\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39482\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39482\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39482\" src=\"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.brighton-bh-550x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.brighton-bh-550x367.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.brighton-bh-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.brighton-bh-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.brighton-bh.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-39482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As well as the depot the adjoining former Corporation Tramway offices are still standing although they are now used by a number of small businesses.
