{"id":36572,"date":"2020-11-30T22:00:52","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T22:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=36572"},"modified":"2020-11-30T16:50:05","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T16:50:05","slug":"new-safety-measure-in-place-on-metrolink-to-reassure-passengers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.britishtramsonline.co.uk\/news\/?p=36572","title":{"rendered":"New safety measure in place on Metrolink to reassure passengers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the England wide lockdown coming to an end from Wednesday 2<sup>nd<\/sup> December, transport bosses in Manchester are seeking to reassure any potential passengers on Metrolink that it will be safe to travel with a number of safety measures in place. Although Manchester will be in tier 3 when the tiers are reintroduced there is still an expectation that passenger numbers will increase and this publicity campaign is seeking to make sure they know the measures which are being taken.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the press release, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: \u201cPublic safety has,\u00a0and\u00a0will remain,\u00a0my absolute priority as we continue to navigate our way out of this pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0Despite\u00a0the region still being under restrictions,\u00a0many people still need to use public transport\u00a0and will want to get out and give\u00a0retailers\u00a0a much-needed boost, and we know concerns over cleanliness and safety can be a real barrier that\u00a0prevents\u00a0people from travelling.\u00a0Public transport is safe due to the measures already in place, but these are extra steps we are taking to further\u00a0boost confidence and\u00a0limit the spread of the virus\u00a0\u2013 which are vitally important if we are to get ourselves back on track.\u00a0\u00a0Despite the end of the national lockdown,\u00a0infection rates across Greater Manchester\u00a0are\u00a0still high, so\u00a0it&#8217;s important that we continue to work together to stop the spread, as this will ultimately help ease restrictions sooner. If you use public transport, please remember\u00a0the basic rules\u00a0\u2013 such as wearing a face covering and sanitising your hands \u2013 when\u00a0using\u00a0our\u00a0buses, trains and trams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Metrolink the following measures have been introduced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A team of \u201ctrambassadors\u201d \u2013 dedicated to helping people travel safely. They will speak to passengers about the latest guidance and safety measures, hand-out free face coverings and hand sanitisers and encourage off peak travel and contactless payment offerings<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning of all trams and tramstops with hospital-grade anti-viral products will be increased by 500 hours a week to coincide with the anticipated increase in passengers. New hand sanitiser dispensers will be installed at the busiest stops.<\/li>\n<li>National hidden disability scheme to be launched to allow staff to provide extra support and to give them the confidence to travel safely<\/li>\n<li>The Greater Manchester TravelSafe Partnership will held additional days of action reminding passengers that if you\u2019re not exempt and don\u2019t wear a face covering you could be stopped from boarding and be fined \u00a3200.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first of the new 27 M5000 trams is due to enter service before the end of the year while the second is due be delivered within the same timeframe. This will help Metrolink to run extra doubles to aid social distancing.
