This plan was initially scuppered when the government pulled the plug due to increased costs (Metrolink was not alone in gaining funding) but GMPTE (as they were then) refused to accept the decision and eventually after much lobbying the DfT agreed to fund the project, albeit split into two parts.

Phase 3a would see new lines built to Oldham and Rochdale (using the former Oldham loop heavy rail line), the South Manchester line as far as St Werburgh’s Road and the East Manchester line to Droylsden. At the same time plans were being formulated for a short spur off the Eccles line to major development at MediaCityUK.

Then came Phase 3b which would see three of the lines started as part of 3a extended – the Oldham and Rochdale line would see a new alignment through Oldham Town Centre and an extension to Rochdale Town Centre, with the South Manchester line extended to East Didsbury and the East Manchester line had an extension built from Droyslden to Ashton-under-Lyne.

That wasn’t it for Metrolink extensions though as the transformative Second City Crossing (2CC) was also constructed which gave a much needed second route through Manchester City Centre giving both extra capacity and a diversionary route if required.

As we write now a further line has started to be constructed to the Trafford Centre with this due to open in 2020-21. Further extensions may follow in the future – including some possibly using tram-train technology – but currently nothing definite.

Manchester Metrolink has rapidly expanded in our 15 years and is without doubt now the centre of modern UK tram operations.

Opening dates of Metrolink extensions covered in this period are:

MediaCityUK spur – 3rd September 2010

South Manchester line to St Werburgh’s Road – 7th July 2011

Oldham and Rochdale line to Oldham Mumps (temporary) – 13th June 2012

Oldham and Rochdale line to Shaw & Crompton – 16th December 2012

East Manchester line to Droylsden – 8th February 2013

Oldham and Rochdale line to Rochdale Railway Station – 28th February 2013

South Manchester line to East Didsbury – 23rd May 2013

East Manchester line to Ashton-under-Lyne – 9th October 2013

Oldham and Rochdale line – Oldham Town Centre – 27th January 2014

Oldham and Rochdale line to Rochdale Town Centre – 31st March 2014

Airport line – 3rd November 2014

Second City Crossing Victoria-Exchange Square – 6th December 2015

Second City Crossing Exchange Square-St Peter’s Square – 26th February 2017

3034 stands at Rochdale Railway Station on the first day of services.
