Six stops on the Manchester Metrolink network have recently received \u201cSafer Tram Stop\u201d status. Salford Quays, Exchange Quay, Harbour City, MediaCityUK, Anchorage and Old
\nTrafford have received the status as a result of their low crime rate and safety and security features.<\/p>\n

The national award scheme for light rail systems recognises stops which have a low risk of crime and have design features such as CCTV, lighting, well defined stop boundaries, good visibility, a light spacious environment, anti vandal measures and clear signage. All of these can deter antisocial behaviour and help passengers using the stops to feel safe.<\/p>\n
As part of the assessment process passenger surveys were carried out and these revealed that over 80% of those using the stops, including passengers who use the stops after 1900, felt that personal security was good.<\/p>\n
Cllr Roger Jones, Vice Chair and Salford representative on the TfGM Committee, said:\u00a0 “Reducing crime and antisocial behaviour on Metrolink is always a priority \u2013 the safety and security of our passengers is paramount and we want people to feel confident about travelling on the network. That\u2019s why we aim to make safety and security features an integral part of tram stop design, and why Metrolink\u2019s Passenger Service Representatives are fully trained to deal with difficult situations and assist passengers when necessary. We also work with Greater Manchester Police on the Travel Safe scheme, which provides uniformed Special Constables \u2013 some of which are also TfGM and Metrolink staff \u2013 to
\ntravel on the network. Their presence can be very reassuring for passengers. We\u2019ll now be seeking Safer Tram Stop accreditation for more stops across the network to help our passengers feel safe and secure when they\u2019re using the system.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
