Glasgow City and Renfrewshire councils have backed the \u00a3144 million project to construct a tram-train line between Glasgow City Centre and Glasgow Airport. As we have recently reported the plan is seen as the best option to link the airport with the city centre and will see services run on current rail lines between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street before they will switch to new tram lines through to the airport.<\/p>\n
Officially known as the Glasgow Airport Access Project the line is a key part of the \u00a31.13 billion Glasgow city region deal funded by the UK and Scottish governments. It is now planned that construction will start in 2022 with the first public services in 2025.<\/p>\n
Cllr Frank McAveety, Glasgow City Council leader, said: \u201cA direct rail link to Glasgow Airport has been an ambition for a long time but it\u2019s now going to be a reality. It\u2019s the single biggest project in our city deal and is of crucial importance to the economy of the whole Glasgow city region.
