After the long and extensive testing and commissioning period 04 was used on the special preview day on 30th May 1999. This was the day before fare paying passengers would be welcomed to the trams and 04 was one of the trams used for a special cavalcade carrying special guests on this first morning. The tram then settled into regular operation and received the name Sir Frank Whittle after 01 was withdrawn. 04 also received the electronic destination displays along with all other remaining trams but remained in the original livery throughout its career.
