It seems rather apt in the week that the last of the Midland Metro T69s ran in service that the class makes its debut in the Picture in Time series as we take a trip back to September 1999 for a view of 04<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Like all 16 of the trams 04<\/strong> was built by Ansaldo at their plant near to Naples and became the fourth of the T69s to arrive at Wednesbury when it arrived on the very last day of June 1998 already completed in the distinctive Midland Metro livery of Red, Purple, Yellow, Green and Grey. After the long and extensive testing and commissioning period 04<\/strong> was used on the special preview day on 30th May 1999. This was the day before fare paying passengers would be welcomed to the trams and 04 was one of the trams used for a special cavalcade carrying special guests on this first morning. The tram then settled into regular operation and received the name Sir Frank Whittle after 01<\/strong> was withdrawn. 04<\/strong> also received the electronic destination displays along with all other remaining trams but remained in the original livery throughout its career. It managed to survive in service until 20th February 2015 when it was withdrawn from service due to the condition of its tyres and it was then stabled with its fellow withdrawn sisters at the bottom of the depot yard, where it remains to this day.<\/p>\n

This photo was taken in September 1999 \u2013 less than four months after the system opened \u2013 and shows 04<\/strong> approaching Birmingham Snow Hill.<\/p>\n
