TRACK SHARING PROPOSED FOR WEST MIDLANDS Centro and Network Rail’s joint study into looking at the possibility of sharing the proposed tram route from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill with freight trains is continuing and Centro have said it is all looking positive at the moment.
If freight trains were used on the tram tracks it would eliminate the need for extra tracks to be built alongside and it is anticipated total construction costs would fall by 20%. Midland Metro would also be able to extend beyond Brierley Hill to Stourbridge and Stourbridge Junction.
EWS (one of the UK’s freight operating companies) have now been approached about the matter and they will be joining in the next stage of the study which should commence in October.
Geoff Inskip of Centro commented: “I think now what central government are looking for (are) schemes that can be afforded. By reducing the costs undoubtedly this makes it much more feasible to bring it forward and actually deliver much earlier than otherwise would be the case."

| British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email. |
