Two large Park and Ride sites are to be built as part of the Manchester Metrolink extension to Oldham and Rochdale. The two sites will be built at the Hollinwood and Derker Metrolink stops whilst improvements will also be made to car parks at other stops on the line, including Shaw and Crompton.
Cllr Richard Knowles, Chair of GMPTA’s Development and Operations Committee, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to use the new Metrolink services, and one way of achieving this is by providing extra parking. Hollinwood Metrolink stop will be close to junction 22 on the M60 so it makes sense to have a large car park there. It should help to reduce the amount of traffic on the A62, and encourage more people to use public transport. The new car park at Derker will make Metrolink accessible to motorists living in East Oldham, Springhead and Royton. I'm sure residents will appreciate the parking improvements at other stops along the line."
Sites have been identified for the car parks with up to 120 spaces likely to be available at Hollinwood and up to 80 at Derker. In addition the parking at Shaw and Crompton will be upgraded to include space for up to 40 cars. Negotiations are currently underway to acquire the required land.
If the TIF money is made available further Park and Ride sites would be built on the Oldham and Rochdale line.
