BURY AND ALTRINCHAM LINE STATIONS TO GET UPGRADES
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 21st September 2008

The former railway stations on the Bury and Altrincham lines of Manchester Metrolink are to be refurbished as part of a new project in conjunction with GMPTA and system operator Stagecoach.

Improvements will be made to safety and security as well as to the general appearance of the stops. Anti-graffiti paint is being used to deter vandals, overgrown weeds and shrubs are being cut back and poster cases replaced. Radcliffe and Whitefield stops were completed earlier this summer with yellow paint used on the handrails and steps to improve the environment for disabled people.

Cllr Yvonne Cresswell, GMPTA’s Bury spokesman, said: “Tram journeys are now much smoother following last summer's track upgrades but many of the stops also need to be improved. The stops on the Bury and Altrincham lines are the oldest on the network as most of them are former railway stations which have been converted for Metrolink use. As well as repainting the stations, we're also looking at what else we can do to improve each stop. Construction work will start next year on building three new Metrolink lines but it's important that we continue to improve the service for existing passengers."
