REFERENDUM WILL BE INTRODUCED FOR CONGESTION CHARGING
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 21st September 2008

In what is surely a big blow to the hopes of receiving the TIF money for transport improvements in Greater Manchester, it has been revealed that a referendum will be held in December 2008 to see whether the public agree that congestion charging should be introduced. The decision was made after a meeting of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) at the end of August.

Lord Peter Smith, AGMA leader, said: “December is the earliest we can organise a referendum that runs across all of Greater Manchester. But I think it is important that the people of the city-region are able to give their views on the proposed investments, and the limited charge, as soon as possible after the formal consultation defines the final form of our proposals. I look forward to the proposals being put to the people of Greater Manchester”

The vote will be held by a postal ballot will these sent out to homes across Greater Manchester at the start of December with a closing date of 11th December 2008.
