Edinburgh City Council leaders have revealed that when the Trams for Edinburgh system has been constructed there will be significant changes for motorists. This will include parking banned in areas, public transport given priority and several roads being closed to all traffic except for trams and buses.
Public exhibitions are to take place over the next few weeks informing the public of the proposed changes which will then be put out to a public consultation.
Cllr Phil Wheeler, convenor of transport, said: “Designing and building a tram system to operate in a thriving city centre like Edinburgh presents many challenges. One of those challenges is to ensure that the tram will be able to run according to its proposed timetable and integrate well with general traffic on the road network. Although this challenge is not unique to Edinburgh, we will do everything possible to balance the needs of all road users without undermining the efficient and effective operation of the tram system."
The highlights of the proposed road and parking changes are:
* Shandwick Place to be closed to cars
* Leith Walk – parking spaces closed and most right turns will be banned
* St Andrew Square – no parking on two sides
* London Road – roundabout to be replaced by traffic lights
