BLACKPOOL & NOTTINGHAM COMPETE FOR UK BUS AWARD
General – Sunday 23rd September 2007
The 2007 UK Bus Awards again have a Street Transit category and both Blackpool and Nottingham are up for the award alongside the Kent Fasttrack Bus Rapid Transit system. This is the second year in succession that Blackpool and Nottingham have been nominated with last years winner Stagecoach Supertram not even on the 2007 list.
It may seem incredible to many that Blackpool is nominated when Sheffield misses out this time but the reason for the nomination is given as “Investing in Blackpool Trams for the future”, so is not really anything to do with the way system is actually operated. It is not known whether Manchester Metrolink and Midland Metro are eligible for the awards.
Steve Burd, Managing Director of Blackpool Transport Services, said: “I am very pleased that our work with the council to invest in renewing the tramway has been recognised with the Street Transit Award nomination. We are all looking forward to the announcement of the awards themselves on 7th November.”
The Nottingham nomination is to celebrate “Another Successful Year for Nottingham’s Tram”.
The full list of nominations is:
* Blackpool Transport Services Ltd – Investing in Blackpool’s Trams for the Future
* Kent County Council – Fasttrack Bus Rapid Transit
* Nottingham Tram Consortium – Celebrating Another Successful Year for Nottingham’s Tram
The award ceremony takes place on Wednesday 7th November at Old Billingsgate in London.
