LIB DEMS CRITICISE SHEFFIELD RAPID BUS PLANS
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 30th September 2007

The Liberal Democrats have criticised the plans for a new rapid bus system between Sheffield and Rotherham, claiming that the buses would actually be more expensive than the tram plan thrown out a few years ago by the government.

It is expected that Sheffield City Council will approve the plans for the “rapid bus” system this week with a bid for funding going to the government later this year. The system would have either buses designed to look like trams or electric trolleybuses, as previously suggested for Leeds after they too had to look again after tram plans were thrown out.

Cllr Sylvia Dunkey, Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet minister for transport, commented: “Given that the entire Bus Rapid Transit system proposed would actually cost more than extending Supertram, we think there is a serious case to go back to Government and demand we receive backing for the original proposal to extend Supertram."

The Supertram extension plan would have seen trams going from the current Meadowhall terminus to Rotherham Parkgate and from Glossop Road up to the Northern General Hospital. This was expected to cost £110 million. However, the “rapid bus” system from Sheffield City Centre through Waverley to Rotherham town centre and from Sheffield City Centre to Rotherham Parkgate via Meadowhall would cost £185-£245 million according to a council cabinet report.

If all goes according to the plans of the Council the buses would commence running during 2011.
