ECCLES LINE TO SEE SERVICE INCREASE
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 30th September 2007
The North West Development Agency have agreed to fund a package of improvements which will see services between Cornbrook and Salford Quays increased to every six minutes during peak periods.
£8 million worth of funding is being put forward ahead of the BBC’s move to the mediacity:uk site at Salford. This money will see new trams from Bombardier, a turn-back facility at Cornbrook and new sidings. During peak periods there will be up to ten trams each hour.
Steve Broomhead, the chief executive of NWDA, said: “am delighted to announce approval of our funding for this important infrastructure project. It will help to support the continued economic growth of the Manchester city region in a sustainable manner and complements other major investments by the public and private sectors."
Chris Farrow, chief executive of Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, added: “This is a very welcome confirmation of the NWDA's support. It brings city centre level of accessibility and frequency of tram service to the whole of the Salford Quays area. The benefits arising from major investments in the quays such as mediacity:uk will be reinforced by the improved Metrolink service."
All being well this work should be completed by 2010 in preparation for the BBC’s move the following year.
