NEW HOPE FOR UK LIGHT RAIL A business leader from Manchester has claimed that congestion charging could be a new hope for trams and light rail in the UK – with funding for lines coming from this source as opposed to traditional government funding.
Angie Robinson, from the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said at a transport conference in Manchester, said: “Like Liverpool, Leeds and Portsmouth, Greater Manchester's Metrolink expansion plans took a significant setback when government funding was withdrawn. For a while it looked like light rail had gone off the government's agenda. The future of light rail has, however, been given new hope, although with funding from alternative sources. Light rail continues to be seen as a vital element and future of the public transport service in Greater Manchester."
