TRAMS RETURN TO BURY
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 16th September 2007

The Manchester Metrolink line to Bury reopened in its entirety on Thursday 13th September with smooth journeys promised following the major track replacement work undertaken since the end of May. Amongst some of the first passengers to enjoy the return were local MPs David Chaytor and Graham Stringer.

Cllr Roger Jones was also on board the tram, and he promised that the upgrades were just the start of major investment on Metrolink. He said: “We're investing hundreds of millions of pounds on Metrolink over the next few years and I'm delighted that this first stage of improvements has been completed. We'll be upgrading stops and ticket machines in the near future, and adding eight extra trams to the network in 2009. Work is also due to start next year on new Metrolink lines to Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden and Chorlton. And we intend to extend Metrolink to other areas of Greater Manchester if our recent bid to the government's Transport Innovation Fund is a success."

David Chaytor, MP for Bury, commented: “Metrolink provides an absolutely crucial link between Bury and Manchester, helping to boost the town's local economy and making it easy to get about in Greater Manchester. I know commuters from Bury to Manchester find it invaluable. Tram journeys will now be much smoother, quieter and more reliable and I'm sure passengers will be as pleased as I am to see the trams running to Bury again."

Blackley MP, Graham Stringer, added; “Metrolink has helped to revitalise Manchester and I'm sure other towns in the region will benefit from its success when the new lines are built. The new track makes a real difference to journeys and I'd encourage people to take the tram and try it out."

It would appear that all the track upgrades have yet to be completed as there are some stretches on the approach to Victoria which have been untouched.
