MORE ATTACKS ON BLACKPOOL TRAMS
Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway – Sunday 5th October 2008

Trams in the Broadwater and Fleetwood areas have been attacked by local youths again with air guns, with three such incidents reported in the last week. One of these attacks saw windows shot out with shards of glass and the bullet going over passengers nearby.

The incidents have not only been happening at night with this latest attack reportedly happening at 1130 around Broadwater. Other attacks have been reported at Lingfield Road, Fleetwood.

Lancashire Police are now investigating the incident to see whether they are connected to those reported earlier in the summer. Insp Dave Vickers commented: “In this latest incident two windows were smashed by a missile. We can't say whether it's a BB gun, pellet gun, catapult or stone - we are carrying out investigations. Fortunately nobody has been injured yet, but whoever is doing this is not only causing damage to public transport but it could lead to injury to members of the public. I want to send out a clear message that the offenders will be dealt with robustly."

As part of the investigation it is planned that Police officers – uniformed and plain clothed – will travel on the trams as a deterrent and also to try and catch the culprits.

Steve Burd, Managing Director of Blackpool Transport, said: “It's an extremely foolish thing to do because with any missile of any type there is a risk of injury."
