CLEARANCE WORK FOR METROLINK TO OLDHAM & ROCHDALE STARTS THIS MONTH Clearance work to make way for the Metrolink extension to Oldham and Rochdale is due to start on the disused Smedley Viaduct later this month. Trees, hedgerows and shrubs along the top of the viaduct are due to be cleared by contractors.
Philip Purdy, GMPTE Metrolink Director, said: “The Metrolink expansion project is progressing well and we are planning to start the main construction work early next year. It's been some time since Smedley viaduct was in use and the area has become quite overgrown over the years. We need to clear the area and complete surveys and investigations before we start to build the new tramline."
The work will take place from 0800 to 1800 and should only take a week to complete. Detailed ecological surveys have taken place and GMPTE are working closely with Natural England and local councils to protect wildlife along the entire route of the extensions.

| British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email. |
