The final Toplots from the Crich Tramway Village ends tonight (Sunday 21st October) at 2200, and as I currently write has not had a single bid! This lot is a day in the Restoration Workshops at the Museum, the one I thought would be the most popular of all - it has a reserve of £99 which must surely be a bargain for a chance of a lifetime behind the scenes to see what goes on in the Workshop especially with the two current major restoration projects LUT 159 and Cardiff 131. SPECIAL NAMING CEREMONY FOR STEPHEN PARASCANDOLO
Croydon Tramlink – Sunday 21st October 2007
On Saturday 20th October 2007, tram 2535 was named 'Stephen Parascandolo'. Stephen Parascandolo was a well-known and well-respected tram enthusiast, light rail advocate, railway engineer and webmaster of the Unofficial Croydon Tramlink Website. Stephen died in a car accident in February 2007, at the age of 26.

EDINBURGH TRAM PROJECT “UNDER BUDGET”

The final business case report for the Trams for Edinburgh project has been released – it is due to be approved by the City Council on Thursday 25th October – and it reveals that at present it is coming £47 million under the allocated £545 million funding. This even includes contingency funding.

Nottingham Express Transit 201 has lost its all over advert for Powergen and has instead received one for My Nottingham Jobs.co.uk. This is a mainly orange design and is once again a full “wrap round” design. Clicking below will take you to a photo of the new look tram.

SUPERTRAM 103 BACK AFTER REFRESH
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 21st October 2007
The latest tram to go through the mid-life refresh on South Yorkshire Supertram - 103 - has returned to service. Fourteen trams have now been so treated. 117 has now been withdrawn from service for a start to be made on its very own refresh.

PLEA TO ENSURE CRT DOES CROSS THE RIVER
Cross River Tram – Sunday 21st October 2007
Campaigners have urged Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, to ensure that the Cross River Tram does make it across the River Thames with current plans looking for the tramway to be built in two stages – with that south of the river most likely to go-ahead.

ENGINEERING WORKS HIT DLR AGAIN
Docklands Light Railway – Sunday 21st October 2007
Services on the Docklands Light Railway between Stratford and West India Quay will be suspended on Sunday 11th November due to further engineering works. A 10 minute frequency bus will operate throughout the day between Stratford and Canary Wharf via Blackwall for connection with the remaining train services. Trains will continue to run from Bank to Lewisham, Bank to King George V and Tower Gateway to Beckton.

NET STAFF TO GET DNA KITS
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 21st October 2007
Bus and tram staff in Nottingham are to get DNA swab kits to help prevent them from being spat upon by the public in the future. All drivers and conductors on the trams will have access to the kits which will enable a DNA sample to be taken and used in court. Last year there were eight incidents of spitting at staff on the trams.

In what must be the shortest lived all over advert Balloon 713 has lost the vinyls for the Conservative Party. The tram has now returned to service in all over white.

SUPERTRAM SERVICES DISRUPTED BY FIRE
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 14th October 2007
Supertram services were severely disrupted on Friday 12th October after a fire at a garage on Woodbourn Road led to explosion fear. For 24 hours after the incident (which happened at 1100) services were only run from Meadowhall to Arena and Middlewood/Herdings Park to Cricket Inn Road.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TRAM & BUS DAY AT BIRKENHEAD!
Birkenhead Tramway – Sunday 14th October 2007
The annual Tram and Bus Day took place at the Birkenhead Tramway on Sunday 7th October. A four tram service was offered with Birkenhead 20, Wallasey 78, Lisbon 730 and Liverpool 762 in use throughout the day. The highlight of the day for many though was the first appearance outside Wales of the replica Llandudno & Colwyn Bay 7, displayed throughout the day at Old Colonial terminus.

TIE VOW TO GIVE TRAM CONTRACTS TO SCOTTISH FIRMS

Willie Gallagher, the chairman of tie, has revealed that at least 40 percent of the contracts to construct the tram system will be given to Scottish firms – the majority of these likely to be from Edinburgh and the surrounding area.

BUSINESSES FEAR OVER POSSIBLE TAX FOR METROLINK

Following the announcement from Chancellor Alistair Darling that the government are pressing ahead with their plans to let councils levy new supplementary business rates of up to 2p in the pound, there are businesses in Manchester who are fearful they may be taxed for the Metrolink extensions.

FIRST TRAM FATALITY IN NOTTINGHAM
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 14th October 2007
Tragedy has struck in Nottingham city centre where a 23 year old man has been the first to die having being struck by a tram since services began in 2004. Matthew Dear from Hucknall was out on Saturday 6th October when he stepped in front of the slow moving tram at around 1855. He was rushed to hospital but later died. NET have said that CCTV footage from the tram will be studied to determine what happened.

COUNCILLOR WANTS END TO HORSE TRAM CONDUCTORS
Douglas Horse Tramway – Sunday 14th October 2007
David Christian – the leader of Douglas Council – has suggested that the Douglas Horse Tramway should be changed to a straight there and back journey with no stops on the way with conductors being axed. Mr Christian has claimed conductors only stand at the front talking to the driver and that anyone could fall off the back of the tram without anyone noticing.

METROLINK MOSS LANE STATION CLOSED AFTER STABBING
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 14th October 2007
The Metrolink station at Moss Lane was closed for a time on Friday afternoon (12th October) after a 21 year old was stabbed in broad daylight. The incident happened actually on Moss Lane close to the station just before 1600. The main was taken to hospital but was discharged later with superficial injuries.

UK’S FIRST EMISSION FREE LIGHT RAILWAY IS MIDLAND METRO
Midland Metro – Sunday 7th October 2007
National Express Group – operators of the Midland Metro through their Travel Midland Metro subsidiary – have announced that they have become the first UK light rail operator to be totally emission free. This has come after they signed a deal with E.ON to supply renewable energy.

NET CONDUCTOR ASSAULTED
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 7th October 2007
A female conductor was assaulted on board a tram on Monday 1st October after a passenger refused to pay their fare having boarded at Highbury Vale at 0830. A 19 year old man from Bulwell has been arrested and cautioned by the Police.

SHEFFIELD TRAM STOP TEENAGE MURDERERS SENTENCED
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 7th October 2007
The two teenage boys from Sheffield who savagely beat a man at Middlewood tram stop have been sentenced and named. Lewis Barlow and Leon Gray, now both 15 but 14 at the time of the attack, were told by Alan Goldsack QC they serve a minimum of 12 and a half years in prison.
