DLR TUNNEL TO WOOLWICH COMPLETED
Docklands Light Railway – Tuesday 24th July 2007
The tunnel which will take the Docklands Light Railway under the River Thames to Woolwich Arsenal has been completed – on time. The 540-tonne boring machine broke through the earth on the south side of the Thames on Monday 23rd July.

METROLINK SERVICE ALTERATIONS
Manchester Metrolink – Tuesday 24th July 2007
With the Manchester Metrolink trackwork really taking hold at the end of this week (the Altrincham line will jojn the Bury one as being closed as from Friday - more on this at the weekend) special services will operate over the weekend (28th/29th Jukly) because of a concert at Old Trafford (the cricket ground) on Saturday and the Salford Triathlon on Sunday.

BURY LINE SHUT FOR NEXT PHASE OF METROLINK UPGRADES

The next stage of the Manchester Metrolink track upgrades commences from Monday 23rd July – and this stage will see the entire Bury line from Victoria through to Bury Interchange closed until 12th September.

The Crich Tramway Village – home of the National Tramway Museum – have been rewarded for the hard work involved in the restoration of Leeds 345 by winning an award at the Heritage Railway Association Carriage & Wagon Awards.

LAUNCH OF PINK TRAM AT SEATON CONFIRMED
Seaton Tramway – Sunday 22nd July 2007
As reported on British Trams Online a few weeks ago, the Seaton Tramway are to launch a pink tram into service from Friday 27th July. This move has come about because of the success of a Lledo tram model recently released in the tramway’s shop in the colour of pink.

GROUP RIDER TICKETS CUT IN PRICE
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 22nd July 2007
The Group Rider ticket – valid on both Nottingham Express Transit and NCT buses – has seen its cost cut by half to £3 during the school holidays. The price cut is in operation from today (Sunday 22nd July) until Saturday 1st September. The Network Rider Ticket will also be cut to £5. For details on the ticket availability on NET here.

RTA CAUSES METRO DISRUPTION
Midland Metro – Sunday 22nd July 2007
Another RTA on the street section of Midland Metro in Wolverhampton caused disruption on Wednesday 18th July. As a result a 10-15 minute service was in operation “until further notice” – one presumes that this is now over although it was still mentioned on the front of their website on Friday lunchtime.

GLASS BREAKS ON CROYDON TRAM
Croydon Tramlink – Sunday 22nd July 2007
A tram has to be withdrawn from service on Croydon Tramlink on Wednesday 18th July after the glass in a door broke whilst it was heading to Wimbledon at Belgrave Walk. It is not known what caused the glass to break.

GMPTA CHAIR HONOURED FOR SERVICES TO TRANSPORT

Cllr Roger Jones, chair of the GMPTA, has been rewarded with the Outstanding Contribution to Local Transport award at the National Transport Awards. On receiving the award the ceremony heard about his “crusade in support of an extension to his city's light rail system, Metrolink".

MAN ATTACKED ON NET
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 22nd July 2007
A man was attacked on board a tram on the Nottingham Express Transit system at 2240 on Tuesday 17th July with a meat cleaver. The 22 year old man was with friends when two men and two women started behaving aggressively. The man was punched, chased and struck with the cleaver – which was removed from a child’s pushchair – suffering cuts and a possible fracture. Two men and a woman have been charged with the attack.

DLR LONDON CITY AIRPORT EXTENSION PRAISED IN REPORT
Docklands Light Railway – Sunday 22nd July 2007
The London City Airport extension of the Docklands Light Railway has been praised by a new report for the huge environmental benefits it has bought. The report claims that there have been around 120,000 fewer taxi rides and 288,000 fewer car journeys since the line opened in December 2005.

FLEETWOOD TRAM SUNDAY 2007
Blackpool & Fleetwood TramwayUpdated Sunday 22nd July 2007
The annual Fleetwood Transport Festival including Tram Sunday took place last Sunday (15th July). The event saw Blackpool Coronation 304 stabled at the Ferry terminus with Blackpool & Fleetwood Box 40, Blackpool Standard 147, Blackpool Boat 605, Blackpool Brush 623, Blackpool Balloon 700 and Stockport 5 seeing use on the Ash Street to North Pier shuttle service. 5 replaced Bolton 66 at the last minute due to a fault.

STAGECOACH METROLINK STARTS TODAY

Today (Sunday 15th July) is the day that a new era commences on Manchester’s Metrolink network as Stagecoach take over the operation of the trams in a ten year contract. Up until now the system has been operated by Serco.

BLACKPOOL BRUSH 631 BECOMES THE NEW WALLS TRAMS
Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway – Sunday 15th July 2007
With Balloon 719 having now lost its all over advert for Walls Ice Cream, Brush 631 has stepped into the breach and has received a red based design for the same sponsor. In other livery news Balloon 711 and Balloon 723 have both lost their vinyls for Lambrini and McDonalds respectively leaving them in their respective base coats. Neither tram has run in service since this occurrence and join 719 out of service which still awaits its Pleasure Beach Infusion vinyls.

NEW SUMMER TIMETABLE STARTS OPERATION IN BLACKPOOL

The Summer 2007 timetable on the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway has now started (it started on Monday 9th July) and sees one of the biggest timetable changes for many years with an increased Saturday service now in operation (this commenced yesterday – Saturday 14th July).

LAXEY MER DEPOT TO BE REFURBISHED
Manx Electric Railway – Sunday 15th July 2007
It has been revealed that a design team is to be appointed to refurbish the Manx Electric Railway’s Laxey depot. Tourism and Leisure Minister confirmed the refurbishment in a written answer to a question in the Tynwald and said that a design team was currently being looked for, after which the building work will go to tender. Funding of up to £400,000 is likely to be required and this will go before Tynwald in January 2008.

IS THE WAIT NEARLY OVER FOR BLACKPOOL?

During Prime Minister Questions this week the shock announcement was made that the “Super Casino” awarded to Manchester may now not happen. Mr Brown was challenged by Fleetwood MP Joan Humble about regenerating Blackpool and he made mention of the several bids currently on the table from Blackpool – including the one for the tramway regeneration. In the Blackpool Gazette it is reported that the wait may nearly be over for a decision from the Department for Transport on the upgrade bid with news that an announcement may be made within two weeks (although we have all heard that before!).

LLANDUDNO & COLWYN BAY REPLICA TRAM 7 UPDATE

Following the successful outings of 7 to Llandudno and Rhos-on-Sea Promenade on the first weekends of May and June respectively, a special outing was arranged to the Conway Road Infants School at the West End, Colwyn Bay on Monday 11 June – much to the delight of the pupils who subsequently had a painting competition of the tram.

PROGRESS CONTINUES ON WARRINGTON 2

The progress on the restoration of Warrington 2 has continued at a pace during June. The MTPS website reports that the electrical wiring is now almost complete and the outer panelling on one side of the lower deck is completed with the new stairs construction being well underway. MAN KILLED AFTER TRAM COLLISION

A 34 year old man has been killed after being hit by a tram in Manchester city centre on Monday (9th July) evening at around 2140. The incident occurred at the G-Mex stop with the tram heading towards the city centre from Cornbrook. Trams were stopped from operating through the area for around four hours after the incident and Greater Manchester Police are now searching for witnesses.

MAN ADMITS TRAM DRIVER ASSAULT

A 40 year old man, a father of two, has admitted assaulting a tram driver in Nottingham whilst drunk and has been warned he could face a jail term. Thomas Gaunt was pushed off a stationary tram after he got into an argument with another passenger in January this year. He then kicked the driver in the groin and punched him in the nose after another scuffle. Mr Gaunt is to be sentenced later this month.

SUPERTRAM 125 BACK IN SERVICE AFTER REFRESH

South Yorkshire Supertram 125 has become the 13th of the fleet to have its mid-life refresh. The tram is now back in service in the revised livery and was spotted operating on the Yellow route today (Thursday 5 July). 118 has now been withdrawn for a start of its refresh.

CAR COLLIDES WITH TRAM IN MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE

A car was involved in a collision with a tram in Mosley Street, Manchester City Centre on Sunday 1 July at around 1330. The three passengers in the Mercedes car escaped serious injury. The tram involved was 1025.

RAIB RELEASE REPORT INTO SEATON DERAILMENT

The RAIB have released their report into the derailment of tram 10 at the Seaton Terminus back on 18 March 2007. It appears that the derailment was caused by “persons unknown” placing an object in the points.

MAN ACCUSED OF TRAMLINK ASSAULT PLEADS NOT GUILTY

Following The man accused of punching a 96 year old man on Croydon Tramlink has pleaded not guilty to the charge at Croydon Crown Court. Stephen Gordan has now been released on unconditional bail with the case adjourned until 8 August.

DLR LAUNCH “PUBLIC ARTS STRATEGY”

NEW NETWORK WEST MIDLANDS LIVERY LAUNCHED ON 09
Midland Metro – Sunday 1st July 2007
Midland Metro’s tram 09 has officially appeared in a new livery promoting Network West Midlands after returning from its accident in December 2006. The tram is now in a striking silver and magenta livery after rebuilding at Alstom in Crewe. Tram 09 was launched at Birmingham Snow Hill on Friday morning, 29 June, though it had been in traffic once or twice already.

NEW ALL OVER AD FOR BLACKPOOL BRUSH 630

As briefly reported last week Blackpool Brush 630 has returned to service in a new all over advert for Karting 2000 - the same sponsor as has been on the car since 1998. This version remains with a yellow base colour but also features purple as part of the advertising vinyls.

AND CENTENARY 643 MAKES IT TWO NEW ADS!

It’s been a busy few weeks for new all over adverts in Blackpool with Centenary 643 receiving one for G Casino - the tram previously advertised the Grosvenor Casino which is in fact the same establishment, it has just been “rebranded”. This livery is all black on the tram sides with advertising vinyls with white fronts and black advertising vinyls.

PARRY PEOPLE MOVER FOR STROURBRIDGE SERVICE

It has been confirmed that a Parry People Mover railcar is to be used on the Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town national rail service from next year. There was a trial service on Sundays during 2006 and now Govia – the new incumbent of the West Midlands rail franchise – look likely to introduce the railcars on this service seven days a week.

SUPERTRAM DISRUPTED BY FLOODING IN SHEFFIELD
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 1st July 2007
The recent severe flooding in the Sheffield area has caused devastation to many people with homes and streets badly affected by water. Even Supertram did not escape disruption with services to Meadowhall suspended on Monday (25 June) afternoon after the shopping centre was flooded on the lower level. Tram services returned to Meadowhall from Tuesday (26 June) although the Purple route only ran as far as Cathedral for the rest of the week.

RUTH KELLY BECOMES SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT

In the recent Cabinet reshuffle by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Ruth Kelly has been moved to become the new Secretary of State for Transport. She replaces Douglas Alexander who becomes Secretary of State for International Development.

Stagecoach – who will take charge of the Metrolink network this month – have allegedly caused consternation amongst staff after they have decided to bring in an outside contractor to clean the trams. This has now led to some staff fearing for their jobs.

ANGER AT BROXTOWE COUNCIL’S POSITION ON NET PHASE 2

Protestors from the anti-tram group Beeston and Chilwell Business and Residents’ Association (BRBRA) have expressed their anger and disappointment at the position of Broxtowe Borough Council to Phase 2 of Nottingham Express Transit. They claim that the Council have missed another opportunity to object to the scheme, and that the further the project progresses the more difficult it will be to do so.
