METROLINK SEASON TICKETS TO RISE IN FEBRUARY
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 27th January 2008
Some Manchester Metrolink season tickets are to rise in price from Friday 1st February. This follows a period of four years since the last rise in season tickets, although other ticket prices did go up in November 2007 with a promise that seasons would remain constant until February 2008.

LIB DEM TRAM IT! CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

The Liberal Democrats have launched their Tram It campaign, calling for Croydon Tramlink to be extended to Sutton. Cllr Abigail Lock and MP Tom Brake were present at the launch which took place at Sutton railway station.

CAMDEN COUNCILLORS URGED TO BACK CROSS RIVER TRAM
Cross River Tram – Sunday 27th January 2008
Councillors from Camden Council are being urged to withdraw their opposition to the proposed Cross River Tram being routed through their borough with secret talks being held between them, Mayor Ken Livingstone and TfL. They are currently the only opposition towards the scheme, and if they remain opposed there are fears it may never get any further north that Waterloo.

FLOODS CAUSE METROLINK DISRUPTION…TWICE!
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 27th January 2008
It has not been a good week for Metrolink with flooding causing the line between Radcliffe and Bury to be closed on two seperate occasions. On the first - Tuesday 22nd January - the River Irwell burst its banks with a double tram being used between Whitefield and Radcliffe on the southbound track and trams to and from Manchester using the northbound platform at Whitefield. Normal service was back up and running by midday on Wednesday 23rd. Then on Thursday 24th January a canal reservoir overflowed in Bury. Evening peak services were terminating at Whitefield with a replacement bus service to Radcliffe and Bury. Normal services resumed by the middle of Friday 25th.

DESIGN WATCHDOG CRITICISES EDINBURGH’S TRAMS

Architecture and Design Scotland (ADS) – a Scottish government watchdog – have released a report which criticises the design and safety of the tram system for Edinburgh. ADS believe that no thought has gone into the design in relation with the street furniture where the tram will go.

BOY INJURED AFTER BIKE AND TRAM COLLISION

A small child – aged five – has suffered multiple injuries after he rode his bike into the path of an oncoming tram between Ampere Way and Waddon Marsh.

WOMAN HIT BY TRAM IN MANCHESTER
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 27th January 2008
A 25 year old woman has been taken to hospital in Manchester after she was struck by a tram in the City Centre at 0045 in the early hours of Saturday 26th January. The woman was crossing Mosley Street at the junction with Princess Street when the incident occurred. She has been transferred to Hope Hospital where she has undergone emergency surgery for head injuries. The Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

ENGINEERING WORK ON METROLINK
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 27th January 2008
There has been engineering work on Manchester Metrolink at Piccadilly from 2300 on Saturday 26th January until 1100 on Sunday 27th January. No trams were serving Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly Station with a replacement bus operating between Piccadilly Gardens and Fairfield Street(for the railway station). Tram services operated as normal from Bury to Altrincham direct and Eccles and Victoria.

NET PHASE TWO PUBLIC INQUIRY ENDS
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 20th January 2008
The Public Inquiry into Nottingham Express Transit Phase Two has now ended with the Inspector – Robert Barker – concluding his tour of the proposed route, following the conclusion of the hearing pre-Christmas.

PLANS TO RETURN ROCKET TO RAILS PROGRESS
Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway – Sunday 20th January 2008
The plans to bring the Illuminated Rocket 732 back to the rails of the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramway are continuing. As previously reported Blackpool Council are discussing with the Lancastrian Transport Trust – who actually own the vehicle – about transferring the tram back into their ownership, with a “mothballed” tram being used as bait.

CHANGES AFOOT FOR FIRST SERIES METROLINK LRVS

A special project team has been set up at Stagecoach Metrolink tasked with carrying out modifications for the LRV fleet. The modifications should include retractable couplers for all the first series LRVs – allowing them all to be used on the Eccles line.

TIE REVEAL NEXT STAGE OF TRAM CONSTRUCTION

tie have announced the next phases of construction – in the form of utility diversion – for Edinburgh city centre. As part of these works a major road – Shandwick Place – will be closed for five months, causing dismay amongst motorists, with work have already commenced as providing a diversionary route through the city centre.

SUPERTRAM 108 LATEST TO BE REFRESHED
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 13th January 2008
South Yorkshire Supertram 108 has become the sixteenth tram of the fleet to be “refreshed”. The tram has now returned to service in the revised Stagecoach blue livery and 106 (currently in an all over ad for flythomson.com) has now been withdrawn from service for a start to be made on its very own refresh.

METROLINK 1021 RETURNS TO SERVICE

1021 has become the latest first series tram to return to service after refurbishment – again in the revised livery. The dash fleet number has only been applied to the A end with the B end currently blank. This leaves just 1007 without the revised livery of the first series cars.

MER SEES 2007 PASSENGER INCREASE
Manx Electric Railway – Sunday 13th January 2008
The Manx Electric Railway saw an increase of passengers in 2007 compared with 2006 with 78,665 passengers being carried. This is compared to the 2006 figure of 71,567, making an increase of 9.9%.

DOUGLAS HORSE TRAMWAY RECORDS 2007 LOSS

It has been revealed that the Douglas Horse Tramway recorded a loss of £271,331 during 2007. This had led to repeated calls for something to be done about the tramway, ensuring costs can be saved to save the historic transport system for years to come.

TIE AGREE TO LOOK AGAIN AT FIRMS TRAM COMPENSATION

tie have agreed to look again at compensation for newer businesses along the tram route. Currently businesses that have started trading since April 2006 – approximately 21 months ago –they will not be entitled to any compensation. This date was originally agreed with the Chamber of Commerce as any business setting up after this date would have been aware disruption would be coming. But guess what? These businesses have now started to whinge that it is not fair!

DLR TO RUN ENHANCED SERVICES DURING LONDON BOAT SHOW

The Docklands Light Railway are running an enhanced service between 11th and 20th January to cater for the Collins Stewart London Boat Show being held at ExCeL London. BOY CAUSES TRAM CHAOS IN POLAND
Overseas – Sunday 13th January 2008
I know it is outside of our remit but a 14 year old boy managed to hack into the tram system of Lodz in Poland causing chaos by switching points. Adam Dabrowski used a TV style remote control to change the points at key junction. The Metro newspaper reports (and this is a direct quote): “a tram driver tried to steer his vehicle on to a right-hand track – only to find himself swerving left.” Steer? What would that be with the steering wheel? Four trams were derailed in total with many passengers injured.

PASSENGER ATTACKED IN SHEFFIELD
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 13th January 2008
A 39 year old man was attacked by a gang of youths having just got off a tram at the Malin Bridge terminus back on Friday 23rd November 2007. He had asked the group to stop swearing and they attacked him leaving him with a gash on the ear. FORTH PORTS TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN TRAMS

Forth Ports – a major landowner in Edinburgh, and owner of the Ocean Terminal site – have agreed to make a significant contribution to the tram scheme, which will see traffic diverted away from Ocean Drive and a plaza formed in front of the Ocean Terminal shopping centre.

METRO EXTENSIONS IN DOUBT OVER ROAD PRICING

It is reported that the chances of Midland Metro extensions are unlikely unless Council officials in the West Midlands agree to allow road pricing to be introduced as part of the TIF. Officials had hoped that the Metro extensions would be able to be dealt with separately but the government have put all transport issues in the region under one umbrella.

WARRINGTON 2 RESTORATION CONTINUES
Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society – Sunday 6th January 2008
The restoration work on Warrington 2 is continuing at Birkenhead with the undercoats for citrus and crimson lake paint being tested, the outer lower saloon panelling has now been completed, the bulkhead doors and mechanism being fitted, ceiling panels now in place and both staircases now being in place. SAN FRANCISCO 1326 SCRAPPED IN MANCHESTER
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 6th January 2008
San Francisco 1326 - one of the two trams bought over from America for possible use on Manchester Metrolink – has been scrapped on site of the Queens Road Depot at the start of September. The tram had been stored at the depot since it was decided the trams were not suitable for operation in Manchester. A second tram - 1226 - remains in Derby where its future is also up in the air.

COUNCILLORS REBEL OVER TRAMS

Two Councillors – one from the Conservatives and one from Labour – have spoken out against the tram plan for Edinburgh. Cllr Kate MacKenzie, Conservative Councillor for Almond, has been suspended by her party after she refused to back the project whilst Cllr Eric Barry, Labour (Colinton/Fairmilehead) spoke out but still voted in favour at the pre-Christmas vote.

STUDY TO LOOK AT MAKING TRAMS SAFER FROM TERRORISTS
