NET PHASE TWO PUBLIC INQUIRY ENDS
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 23rd December 2007
The Public Inquiry into Phase Two of Nottingham Express Transit has now finished with the Inspector now going away to prepare his report for the Secretary of State for Transport, Ruth Kelly. In the final week more objectors were heard including some from the Beeston and Chilwell Business and Residents Association (BCBRA) and Environment not Trams (ENT).

ONE FINAL OUTING FOR REPLICA L&CBER 7 IN 2007
Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tramway Society – Sunday 23rd December 2007
The replica Llandudno & Colwyn Bay 7 had made one final outing in 2007, this time to add to the Christmas spirit in Llandudno town centre on Saturday 22nd December. The tram was displayed in Upper Mostyn Street from 1100 to 1700. Follow the link below to view some images from the day.

WILL PRINCES STREET SEE TWO MONTH CLOSURE?

tie are considering closing Princes Street – the major shopping street in the centre of Edinburgh – completely for two months in 2009, to allow the laying of tram tracks as plans for the construction of the tramway move on. I don’t think I need to tell you that the idea of this plan has been met with outrage and dismay by businesses in the vicinity.

MIDLAND METRO FARES REVISED FROM 2ND JANUARY 2008

Midland Metro fares are to be revised from 2nd January 2008 with Travelcard prices being frozen, in order to try and encourage people to use the trams regularly.

TRAMS FOR EDINBURGH NEWS ROUND-UP

As well as the news that Princes Street could be shut for two months in 2009 as part of the construction (see other story) a few other news stories have come out from Edinburgh this week. They include a new official being appointed to oversee the relationship between the Council and tie, the sale of land in the city to help pay for the tram and a survey being launched amongst traders over the affect of the construction.

MAN DRIVES INTO VICTORIA AFTER FOLLOWING METROLINK
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 23rd December 2007
A man has been banned from driving for 16 months and fined £250 after he admitted to drink driving following an incident where he drove his car into Victoria station having followed a tram. 28 year old Damien Smith’s lawyer told magistrate’s: “It was also extremely dark and he couldn't see where he was going." He was found to twice over the limit having been stopped by Police after the incident.

CAROL SINGERS ON METROLINK

Between Monday 17th and Wednesday 19th December carol singers from the University of Manchester Chorus performed on board Metrolink to help people to get the festive cheer and to encourage others to use the trams at this busy time of year.

MAN JAILED FOR TRAM CLEAVER ATTACK
Nottinghm Express Transit – Sunday 23rd December 2007
Jonathan Lay, 28, has been sentenced to a minimum of four years in prison for a cleaver attack on a tram in Nottingham back on 17th July. He attacked Keith Harvey with the meat cleaver – which had been in a child’s buggy – which left him with a broken arm and cuts to the bone. Two others involved in the incident also got shorter prison sentences. The judge commented: “You caused mayhem in that tram. You caused people to flee from it, terrified for what you were going to do with that meat cleaver.”

DLR LANGDON PARK STATION OPENS
Docklands Light Railway – Sunday 16th December 2007
The new Docklands Light Railway station at Langdon Park – between All Saints and Devons Road stations on the Stratford line – opened on Monday 10th December. The station cost £7.5 million to construct and should provide better access to London’s public transport network for thousands of residents in Tower Hamlets.

HORSE TRAM RETURNS TO EDINBURGH AS CALLS MADE FOR 35 TO RETURN

An Edinburgh horse tram was returned to the Scottish capital for restoration in January this year and has been stored in the Seafield depot of Lothian Buses since – alongside tram 226 which has been there for over 20 years. And now transport groups are calling on a transport museum for the city which would also see 35 - currently on loan to the National Tramway Museum – return to be on display in its home city.

TRAM “SPLITS THE POINTS” IN NOTTINGHAM
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 16th December 2007
A tram heading for Station Street managed to split the points (reported in the local press as derailed) on Canal Street Bridge causing disruption to services. The incident involved tram 211 and saw the middle section of the vehicle split the points on Tuesday 11th December. NET Operations Manager Ray Harris said: “We do not know the exact cause of it at this moment. The tram has been taken out of service as a precaution and is undergoing a complete safety check before being put back into service." An investigation is underway.

TRAM AND BUS COLLIDE IN MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 16th December 2007
A tram and a bus collided in Manchester city centre on Monday 10th December 2007. The incident happened around lunchtime on London Road near to Piccadilly railway station. Two passengers on board the tram and two on the bus suffered minor injuries in the accident which saw traffic diversions for a couple of hours. The tram involved was 102x (the photo is not clear enough to tell the last digit) and a photo of the aftermath of the collision is available on the Manchester Evening News website, just follow the link below.

CARDIFF 131 RESTORATION UPDATE

CROYDON ARENA “WILL SEE TRAM CHAOS”

The Croydon Guardian are reporting that an agreement has been reached for Tramlink over the proposed Croydon Arena. This would see Wellesley Road tramstop become alighting only during events and only one extra tram for events of up to 9,000 people attending. Needless to say many have complained that this would not be adequate.

PECKHAM VISION WANT MEETING WITH TfL

Campaigners from Peckham Vision, who suggested to Transport for London that a loop line should be built in the centre of Peckham for Cross River Tram rather than just terminating there, are calling on talks with TfL to discuss the matter further.

NOTTINGHAM EXPRESS TRANSIT CHRISTMAS SERVICES
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 16th December 2007
Services on NET over Christmas have now been revealed. On both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve a special service will be in operation. This will see a Saturday service from 0600 to 2000 and then between 2000 and 0000 a reduced service will operate with trams every 15 minutes from Station Street, alternately serving Hucknall and Phoenix Park (in effect giving these locations a tram every 30 minutes). A Sunday service will be in operation on Wednesday 26th December and Tuesday 1st January with no trams on Christmas Day. A normal service will operate from Thursday 27th December to Sunday 30th December and will then resume on Wednesday 2nd January 2008.

NAPPIES FOR HORSES ON ISLE OF MAN?

Cllr David Christian, the leader of Douglas Council, has called on the horses operating the Douglas Horse Tramway to be forced to wear nappies to collect their droppings as he seeks to make money savings. He also wants to see conductors axed saying they normally ride at the front of the tram smoking anyway. Raina Chatel, the Leisure Services chairman, has agreed to look into nappies for the horses.

NUMBERING SCHEME FOR NEW DLR VEHICLES REVEALED?
Docklands Light Railway – Sunday 9th December 2007
Several publications have recently reported that the 55 new vehicles for the Docklands Light Railway, which should start to arrive in London sometime during 2008, will be numbered in the 101-155 series. This marks a change for the DLR as previously it was reported that were unable to have more that two digit numbers as their computer software was unable to cope!

LATEST PROGRESS ON CARDIFF 131

LATEST TRACKWORK UPDATE FROM BLACKPOOL

METROLINK SERVICES DELAYED BY STOLEN CAR

Metrolink services were disrupted during the morning rush hour of Friday 7th December after a stolen car was left abandoned on the tracks opposite the Bridgewater Hall. The silver Audi is believed to have been stolen and a man was seen running from the scene at approximately 0540. The car was moved by the Police and services resumed.

TfL REJECT PECKHAM VISION’S VISION FOR CRT

Bosses at Transport for London have rejected campaign group Peckham Vision’s idea that the Cross River Tram should run on a loop through the town, rather than just terminating there.

PRAISE FOR METROLINK TRAMSTOP UPGRADES

Upgrades to Metrolink carried out over the summer are being praised for making it easier for disabled people to travel over Greater Manchester. Almost 4,000 tactile paving stones were laid at 22 platforms on the Bury and Altrincham lines as part of the upgrades. In addition new boarding points were created for people with wheelchairs or prams so they know where to get on the trams.

MIDLAND METRO CHRISTMAS SERVICES
Midland Metro – Sunday 9th December 2007
Christmas and New Year services on Midland Metro have been revealed. There will be no service on Christmas Day, a 20 minute service on Boxing Day between 1000 and 1800 – with additional trams operating as required for The Hawthorns as West Bromwich Albion are playing at home, and a Bank Holiday service on Tuesday 1st January 2008 (starting at 1000). All other days will see a standard service. On Boxing Day and New Years Day off peak fares will apply all day with OAP/Disabled Concessionary passes also accepted throughout the day.

ALL OVER ADVERT FOR TRAMLINK 2548

Tramlink 2548 has had vinyls applied for an all over advertisement for The Simpsons Movie on DVD. The design is mainly yellow (obviously) with pink doors and is complete contravision over all the windows.

SUPERTRAM 117 THE LATEST BACK IN SERVICE

The latest tram in Sheffield to undergo the mid-life refresh - 117 has returned to service in the new livery. This becomes the fifteenth tram to be so treated and work has now commenced on 108.

BLACKPOOL TRAMWAY CROSSINGS TO BE AXED

It has been revealed that as part of the trackwork being undertaken on the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramway a number of pedestrian crossings will be closed between Cabin and Little Bispham. Many of these gated crossings not at tram stops do not meet modern tramway safety best practice and so will be removed as part of the track upgrades.

TRAMPOWER FIRE RAIB REPORT RELEASED

The RAIB have released their report on the fire that gutted one end of the Trampower tram back on 24th January 2007. Interestingly, despite ten months of investigation, the report is unable to give conclusive reasons why the tram caught light but rather concentrates on the design and operating control measures that were in operation and those which would be needed to prevent a similar incident occurring again.

REPLICA LLANDUDNO & COLWYN BAY 7 HIGHLIGHT OF TOWN’S CHRISTMAS PARADE

Yesterday (Saturday 1st December) saw the replica Llandudno & Colwyn Bay 7 become the star of the show at Llandudno’s Christmas Parade. The tram attracted far more attention than Father Christmas himself - perhaps a sign of the times !

EXEMPTION GIVEN TO HILLSBOROUGH TRAM GATE RESIDENTS
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 2nd December 2007
Sheffield City Council have agreed to give residents who faced a lengthy detour to get to their homes because of the tram gates in Hillsborough exemption. People living in two streets in the area can now register their number plates of their cars with the Council who will then add them to a list of exemptions.

MORE COMPLAINTS THAT TRAM ROAD CLOSURES WILL KILL BUSINESSES

More businesses are complaining that the plan to close roads in Edinburgh City Centre as part of the tram project will hit their businesses hard as they rely on the passing trade. Many believe that losing passing motorists and parking spaces will be a disaster.

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER BEING HIT BY TRAM
South Yorkshire Supertram – Sunday 2nd December 2007
A 47 year old woman has been seriously injured after being hit by a tram on Gleadless Road near to its junction with White Lane. The incident happened at approximately 1950 on Monday 26th November and Police are now investigating the circumstances. The tram driver is understood to have applied the emergency brake and sounded the horn but was unable to stop in time. The woman was taken to the Northern General Hospital with severe head injuries. No one on board the tram was injured although the driver was understood to have been in shock.

MAN TRAPPED UNDER TRAM

A man had to be freed from under a tram in Nottingham City Centre after he had crouched down to pick up a beer can he had dropped. The incident occurred in Fletcher Gate at approximately 1745 on Sunday 25th November. The man’s leg was trapped and he had to be cut free by the Fire Service.
