Crossbench 16 derails on the MER

Manx Electric Railway services didn’t run to Ramsey on the morning of Saturday 17th July to allow for track maintenance to take place. It later transpired that the maintenance was required after Crossbench 16 had derailed at Lewaigue the previous day.

The details of what caused the derailment have not been publicly announced by Isle of Man Transport although photos online show that 16’s front bogie left the tracks with the tram coming to rest at a hedge alongside the track. Lewaigue is located around two miles from Ramsey.

The track maintenance was announced early on Saturday 17th July with all services on the MER initially only able to run between Derby Castle and Laxey. The repairs were completed during the morning and the first through service north from Laxey to Ramsey was the 1310 timetabled working.

Its not clear whether 16 received any significant damage in the derailment.
