In Pictures: New platform at Crumpsall starts to receive track

Crumpsall may seem some distance from the new Trafford Park extension of Manchester Metrolink but with trams from the Trafford Centre set to run via Manchester City Centre to this stop on the Bury line it is very much at the forefront of ongoing construction work. Crumpsall is receiving an extra platform face to allow trams to terminate here out the way of through trams on the Bury line and recent progress has seen the track start to be laid.

The arrangement here is very much like that at Shaw & Crompton on the Oldham and Rochdale line with the inbound side seeing an island platform in place (opening up the outer side of this platform to allow trams to terminate) with tracks on either side. The major difference is the length of track being laid as it will run north beyond the end of platform and through the unused arch of Crumpsall Lane bridge. This gives enough length to both accommodate a double tram at the platform along with a double tram stabled beyond the platform face. The track installation is at an early stage but the points are already in place to connect this section to the main line.

Looking south from Crumpsall showing the new track being put into place leading to the new platform face.

The other end of the stop and beyond the end of the new platform where track is also being laid to allow a double tram to be stabled out the way. (Both Photographs by Steve Hyde, 11th June 2019)
